Assignments
I. Books and Journals
- Carefully read the instructions for keeping a Reading Response Journal. You are expected to keep a Reading Response Journal for each book/story you read for this assignment (3 total). Be sure to follow the instructions.
- READ THIS BOOK FIRST: How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster
- Take thorough notes.
- Record and define every term with which you are not familiar.
- We will often refer to various chapters in this book during our studies throughout the school year. Thorough and complete notes will aid your understanding of the material covered throughout the year. - AFTER you’ve finished How to Read Lit..., you may read The Handmaid’s Tale and Friday Black in any order you choose.
- As you complete a Reading Response Journal for both selections apply the knowledge you’ve gained from your reading of How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster. Be sure to make connections between these works in your daily writing.
- From each piece (not How to Read Lit…), choose fifteen (15) quotations and respond to each, explaining their significance in the overall context of the novel/story. Record the page number(s)where each quote can be found. Be sure to include a personal response to each quote.
- Record and define every term with which you are not familiar.
II. Assessment
You will complete an assessment on TBD (sometime in September) covering the two books. You will be permitted to use your journals to help you complete the assessment, so it is imperative that you take thorough notes.
*Do NOT watch the miniseries related to The Handmaid’s Tale with the hopes of understanding the novel. The series is significantly different from the novel. You will not pass the test simply by watching the miniseries.
III. Additional Resources
Refer to the list of Honors/AP Literary Terms posted on the UCTEnglish website to help you complete your journals. A copy will also be posted in our Google Classroom. A link to helpful resources is also found below.
